Problems

Destinations with a high reliance on tourism are in a constant balancing act. On one hand, tourism is their livelihood that provides opportunity and growth. On the other, tourism saps their culture and infrastructure. As responsible travelers, we want to do as little harm to a destination as possible.
Economic leakage
Foreign corporations play an oversized role in the tourism industry leading to money spent by tourists leaving the local economy. Be sure to stay in locally-owned lodging and only book through locally-owned tour operators.
Overtourism
Overtourism leads to a degraded quality of life for the local community because their day-tp-day is affected by too many visitors. You should try to travel during the low and shoulder season to avoid overwhelming the destination.
Environmental threats

The act of traveling can be a carbon-intensive process, particularly if you’re traveling by plane and relying on single use packaging. Adopt good sustainability practices like opting for slower modes of transport and bringing a water filter can reduce carbon emissions.

Housing Displacement
Tourist lodging is leading to locals getting displaced due to higher rent costs. Try to stay in hotels and book Airbnbs that have a host who lives onsite.
Ecological threats
Conservation areas are threatened by tourist development. Make sure you follow local guidance when engaging in any outdoor activity. Minimize your own footprint by doing things like wearing biodegradable sunblock, reducing single-use plastic, and sticking to well-traveled paths.
